Priority will be given to projects which seek to strengthen Australia's bilateral relationship with Japan in the following areas: Economics and Trade; Security, Regional and International Relations; Education; Science and Technology; Arts; Media; and Sport. Internal Deadline: 18th July 2008 2.*AUSTRALIAN AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPEMENT ausaid website (i) Australian Development Research Awards 2008 Full Program The sponsor is calling for submissions of applications for the 2008 Development Research Awards valued at $50,000 to $250,000 per year up to 3 years. It aims to attract high quality research that informs policy development and increase the general stock of knowledge around development issues. Applications must nominate one of the following research priority themes: Development effectiveness, Disability, Economics, Education, Environment, Food Security, Gender, Governance and State Building and Health. (ii) 2009 Pacific Economic Postdoctoral Fellowships Full Program The sponsor is calling for submissions of applications from postdoctoral candidates (early career researchers within 5 years of completing a PhD) from Australian universities. Research must address economic issues affecting Pacific island countries. The Fellowship is valued at $110,000 to cover salary and other cost for a project to be completed within 12 months of commencement, for research to begin in 2009. Internal Deadline: 20th August 2008. TOP Grants and Fellowships Science & Engineering Medicine 3.AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR AIDS RESEARCH AMFAR website (i) Mathilde Krim Fellowships in Basic Biomedical Research AMAF full program The goal of the Mathilde Krim Fellowships in Basic Biomedical Research program is to provide funding for exceptional researchers who are new to the HIV/AIDS field. The fellowship provides support for two years of postdoctoral research, with the possibility of one additional year. Applicants must have a research or clinical doctorate, no more than four years of postdoctoral training and must be mentored by an experienced investigator who is at the associate professor level or higher. Each fellowship is funded at a total of up to US$125,000. (ii) Research Grants Full Program The sponsor is offering support for biomedical research projects relevant to exploring novel antiretroviral targets and inhibitors. Principal investigators for research grants must be faculty-level researchers affiliated with a nonprofit institution. In general, funds are applied to direct costs of salaries and fringe benefits for professional and technical personnel, laboratory supplies and equipment, travel, and the publication of findings. Research grants of up to US$120,000 are awarded for one year without assurance of continued funding. (iii) Fellowship Full Program The Fellowship encourages the postdoctoral (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent) investigator with limited experience in the field to advance a career in HIV/AIDS research. Fellowships are up to US$125,000 for two years and may not be renewed for additional funding. The applicant’s interest in a career in HIV/AIDS will be demonstrated by previous relevant work at the postdoctoral fellow or instructor level and will be carefully evaluated. Internal Deadline: 16th July 2008 4.GLAUCOMA RESEARCH FOUNDATION The Shaffer Fund for Innovative Glaucoma Research – Preliminary Proposals Glaucoma website full program The sponsor is accepting preliminary proposals in the research of novel and high impact clinical epidemiological and laboratory research pertaining to one of the sponsor's five strategic goals: protect and restore the optic nerve; accurately detect glaucoma and monitor its progression; find the genes that cause glaucoma; understand intraocular pressure and develop better treatments; and determine the risk factors for glaucoma damage using systematic outcomes data. Instigators must possess a graduate or post-doctoral degree to apply for support. Internal Deadline: 25th July 2008 5.*NATIONAL HEALTH & MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL NHRMC website (i) Program Grants Scheme full program, PDF The aim of the Program Grants scheme is to provide support for teams of high calibre researchers to pursue broadly based collaborative research activities. The sponsor does not fund the total cost of research. Applicants employed by publicly funded research agencies are required to: Declare the source, duration and level of funding already held for research in the particular area of the application; and make a case for funding under the policy for the particular funding scheme. Program Grants will be of five years duration, commencing in January 2010. (ii) Centres of Clinical Research Excellence (CCRE) Full Program The CCRE Scheme provides funding for innovative, high quality clinical research to be conducted either by established investigators with a strong track record in clinical research and clinical training, or new clinical research collaborators. The CCRE program is open to all clinical researchers in Australia who are seeking to promote collaboration between health and medical researchers. CCRE funding will not exceed a maximum total of $2.5 million over five years. Intending applicants who have not yet requested an ID number should do so as soon as possible. AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND AGEING National Binge Drinking Strategy Community Level Initiative First Round Funding website full program The sponsor is seeking applications from organisations to undertake projects on the prevention and reduction of binge drinking by young people, specifically in the age group 12-24 years. An upper limit of $150,000 has been set for individual project proposals for up to 2 years, and $250,000 for collaborations and combined proposals for up to 2 years. ALLIANCE FOR LUPUS RESEARCH (ALR) Pilot Grants Website Full Program The ALR is interested in applications in: Human studies, Research that takes advantage of existing or planned collections of patients or clinical materials, Research that seeks to identify or characterise putative biomarkers, Functional validation research that takes advantage of previously published genome wide association studies to determine which candidate genes/variants have an authentic role in human lupus, Research exploring the molecular pathways modulated by candidate genes/variants that may be pertinent to human lupus. Funding is up to US$75,000 for one year. Internal Deadline: 1st August 2008 8.NATIONAL HEART FOUNDATION/BEYONDBLUE Cardiovascular Disease and Depression Strategic Research Program Website Full Program The sponsor is inviting applications for funding from researchers who would like to pursue research to improve health outcomes for people with depression and cardiovascular disease or risk, through the development and testing of effective treatments and/or health practices. The program will support quality research that is practical with specific endpoints and clearly defined pathways to care. Grants are 1 - 5 years duration with a total funding of $10,000 to $3,500,000. Internal Deadline: 8th August 2008 9.SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME RESEARCH FOUNDATION INC (SA) Research Grants Website Full Program SIDS and Kids supports a range of research into mortality in infants (two years and under) who die suddenly and unexpectedly from stillbirth, neonatal death, and SIDS. The aim is to promote and assist Scientific and Medical Research related to the possible causes, effects and/or prevention of infant death. Applicants need to consider certain points before submitting a request: animal studies will not be considered if sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the focus of the proposal; it must abide by the 1993 NICHD definition of SIDS. Furthermore, any hypothesis on SIDS must take account the success of the “Back to Sleep” Campaign. Internal Deadline: 13th August 2008 10.ROYAL AUSTRALIAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS Website (i) Don and Lorraine Jacquot Fellowship Full Program The sponsor provides a Fellowship of between $90,000 - $100,000 for research and further clinical training of young nephrologists and to advance knowledge in the treatment of renal disease. The Fellowship is tenable for one year in the first instance with the option of renewal for up to five years. (ii) Jacquot Research Establishment Award Full Program The sponsor provides a research establishment award to assist in the establishment of a career in nephrology research. The award is valued at $90,000 and is tenable for one year with the option of renewal. The award may provide salary or other support such as laboratory set-up costs or a short-term Research Assistant appointment. Internal Deadline: 22nd August 2008 11.CANCER INSTITUTE NSW Website (i) Early Career Development Fellowships Full Program The Cancer Institute NSW Early Career Development Fellowships are aimed at encouraging the very best researchers to choose cancer as their selected field of research endeavour. The sponsor provides funding up to $200,000 per annum for 3 years to develop and support researchers who have no more than a total of 5 years post doctoral experience (i.e. awarded PhD or having achieved equivalent status on or after 7th September, 2003) and can demonstrate substantial ability and potential as a future cancer research leader. (ii) Clinical Research Fellowships Full Program The sponsor is offering salaries (or “top-up” in the case of an applicant who has been awarded an NHMRC Fellowship) and up to $100,000 per annum project costs for three years for Clinical Research Fellowships aimed at strengthening and supporting clinician research in hospitals by providing opportunities for cancer clinicians to develop and sustain long-term careers in cancer research. AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS Inter Arts - Synapse Website Full Program The sponsor's Synapse Initiative provides opportunities for artists and scientists to work together, and seeks to promote the benefits of such collaborations to the wider community. Synapse aims to advance the role the arts plays in Australia's innovation system. The Initiative involves 3 streams- ARC linkage partner organisation grant, Synapse residences and Synapse database. Under an agreement with the Australian Council, the ARC will accept applications that propose the Council as a partner organisation on significant research collaborations. Internal Deadline: 1st September 2008 Business, Built Environment, Law 13.SUSTAINABLE TOURISM COOPERATIVE RESEARCH CENTRE Website (i) Australian Tourism in a Water Constrained Economy: Scoping Study – Request for Proposals Full Program The sponsor is seeking Request for Proposals to provide a framework which will direct research into the deployment of water within and across the tourism sector. It is expected this research will lead to a process for industry consultation to rank the various issues and garner support for a national tourism water research agenda. Internal Deadline: 18th July 2008 (ii) General Call for Expressions of Interest Full Program The sponsor is seeking independent research Expressions of Interest based on individual areas of research interest that fit within the broad goals of Sustainable - Destinations, Enterprises and Resources. Emphasis should be placed on understanding the fundamental problems and issues in the area of inquiry, designing, and utilising robust, replicable research methodologies, employing multi-method approaches and relating the field to the broader context of tourism. Internal Deadline: 8th August 2008 14.CPA AUSTRALIA Website (i) Research Grants Full Program The sponsor is offering funding of up to $10,000 for academic accounting researchers who have not yet developed a research profile sufficient to attract funding from other sources. Funds will not generally be available for teaching relief. The grant may be held concurrently with another award or scholarship. A progress report must be made to CPA Australia within six months following receipt of the grant and a final research report is required. The creative research component is expected to be performed by the grant recipient. (ii) Frank Burke Scholarship Full Program The sponsor offers up to $10,000 for research in the area of taxation and/or superannuation to academic accounting researchers based in Australian universities. Applicants must be permanent residents of Australia presently employed at an Australian tertiary institution. (iii) Small Business Research Grant Full Program The sponsor is offering a grant of up to $10,000 to researchers based in Australian universities for research into small business issues. Research can be on any aspect of small business, however, projects will be assessed according to their relevance to CPA Australia members who are in business or who provide business advice. (iv) Not For Profit Research Grant Full Program The sponsor is offering a grant of up to $10,000 to researchers based in Australian universities for a research project on not-for-profit issues. The project may be on any aspect of the not-for-profit sector that the researcher believes to be of importance and will be a hot issue in the next 12 months. Applications will be assessed according to their relevance to CPA Australia members who are in the not-for-profit sector or work with this sector. (v) William P Birkett Research Grant Full Program The sponsor is offering a research grant of up to $10,000 for research into the area of management accounting to academic accounting researchers based in Australian or New Zealand universities. Nominations close late July. 16.AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE Website (i) Le Fevre Memorial prize Full Program Nominations are invited for the RJW Le Fevre Memorial Prize to be awarded to a young scientist (under 40 years at the deadline) for distinguished basic research in chemistry. The prize is valued at $3,000, and is awarded annually. (ii)Dorothy Hill Award Full Program The award will support research in the earth sciences including reef science, ocean drilling, marine science and taxonomy, by female researchers under 40 years at the closing date, except in the case of significant interruptions to a research career. An honorarium of $5,000 will be awarded. The award will be made annually and will be restricted to candidates who are normally resident in Australia and for research conducted mainly in Australia. (iii) Fenner Medal Full Program The Fenner Medal recognises distinguished research in plants (excluding the biomedical sciences) by scientists under 40 years at the closing date. The award is made annually and is restricted to candidates who are normally resident in Australia and for research conducted mainly in Australia. An honorarium of $1000 is paid and in the case of a shared award it is divided. (iv) Gottschalk Medal Full Program The Gottschalk medal is to recognise outstanding research in the medical sciences by scientists under 40 years at the closing date. The awardee may not be a Fellow of the Academy. The award is made annually and is restricted to candidates who are normally resident in Australia and for research conducted mainly in Australia. An honorarium of $1,000 will be paid and in the case of a shared award it will be divided. (v) Pawsey Medal Full Program The Pawsey Medal recognises outstanding research in physics by scientists under 40 years of age. The award is made annually and is restricted to candidates who are normally resident in Australia and for research conducted mainly in Australia. (vi) David Craig Medal Full Program The David Craig Medal recognises the outstanding contribution to chemical research of Emeritus Professor David Craig, AC, FAA, FRS. Its purpose is to recognise contributions of a high order to any branch of chemistry by active researchers. The awardee is expected to present several public lectures in cities across Australia. The award is made annually. (vii) Hannan Medal Full Program The Hannan Medal recognises the achievements in time series analysis of the late Professor E.J. Hannan, FAA. Because of Professor Hannan's broad interests in the mathematical sciences the award is made in one of three areas in turn at two-yearly intervals – pure mathematics; applied and computational mathematics and statistical science. Although work carried out during a candidate's entire career will be taken into consideration, special weight will be given to recent research. (viii) Ruth Stevens Gani Medal in Human Genetics Full Program The sponsor provides an award for research in human genetics and honours the contribution of science in human cytogenetics by the late Ruth Stephens Gani. Its purpose is to recognise distinguished research in human genetics, including clinical, molecular, population and epidemiological genetics and cytogenetics. It will be awarded to researchers under 40 years at the closing date, except in the case of significant interruptions to a research career. The award will be made annually and is restricted to candidates who are normally resident in Australia and for research conducted mainly in Australia. NOTE: If a proposed candidate is already the recipient of an Academy award, the second award must be for a distinct, additional, body of work undertaken since the first award, and/or work in a different field. Nominations close mid August 17.ROYAL AUSTRALIAN & NEW ZEALAND COLLEGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGISTS Media Award RANZCO Website Full Program The sponsor provides two prizes of $3,000 each to the media professional who is judged to have given readers/viewers/listeners the best understanding of eye care issues specifically related to the work of Australian and/or New Zealand ophthalmologists. Nominations close mid August. 18.TRUST Portia Geach Memorial Award Trust Website Full Program This award is given each year to the best portrait painted from life of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters or the Sciences. Nominees must be a female Australian resident who is either Australian born, British born or a naturalised Australian. The recipient of the 2008 Portia Geach Memorial Award will receive $18,000. Nominations close mid August. TOP Conference & Travel Grants 19.NURSES REGISTRATION BOARD (NSW) Category 4 Scholarships: Conference/Seminar Attendance Website Full Program The sponsor is offering scholarships, for registered and enrolled nurses who have completed the equivalent of two years full time employment as a nurse in NSW, to assist with attendance at an international, national or local conference, or seminar. Funding for the scholarship will be dependent upon factors including length and location of the conference. Applicants must provide objectives outlining what they wish to obtain from such a conference and, if applicable, from an associated study tour, and demonstrate the relevance of these to nursing/midwifery practice.
